EEG Biofeedback at Preschool ADHD:

Prevention of School Problems

Ministry of Education of Czech Republic Grant Study

Between 1998 and 1999 the Institute of Educational and Psychological Counseling of the Czech Republic (IPPP CR) carried out a study evaluating the effectiveness of the EEG Biofeedback method in preschool children. Its results suggested the method could be recommended for the application in pedagogical and psychological counseling. The results also opened the discussion why it is applied as late as after the child enters school age, while it would be more reasonable to use it as prevention in the preschool age. The reason why the method should be used as a kind of prevention for preschoolers is that professionals detect abnormalities in the mental development of children, clearly signalized as early as in the preschool age, more and more often. A timely psychological diagnosis and the anticipation of possible problems are not as complicated as they used to be. A more complicated matter, though, seems to be the answer to the question how to minimize possible future problems before the well-known vicious circle begins: failing at school, disappointing parents, parents pressing upon the child, other failures and so on.

IPPP CR, following a project of Ministry of Education called EEG Biofeedback: Prevention in Preschool Children, was given the chance to evaluate the effectiveness of the EEG Biofeedback method in preschool children.

The preschool age is a period offering important information about children’s possible problems both to parents and professionals. The most common cause of those problems seems to be Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and its relative symptoms: aggression, emotional instability, impulsivity, communication deficiency, attention deficits, and unstable personality development in terms of child’s performance. The results of a number of studies confirmed that the above-mentioned problems frequently coincided with learning disabilities and speech disorders. ADHD children were also found to frequently suffer from enuresis, sleep disorders, and were prone to various accidents and injuries.
